Here is what a one person who participated last year had to say;
Prior to July 2012, I would have never used the word “triathlete”
among my list of accomplishments. Early
this year, approaching my 47th birthday, I found myself searching to
change the way that I approach exercise – with the hope of provoking a sustainable
lifestyle change having an emphasis on aerobic activities and intending to
improve my overall health.
Even though the program was intended for a group, Thea (our
coach) customized portions of the program for each participant based upon
individual abilities and goals. Not only
did she train us in the 3 disciplines for endurance over the sprint triathlon
distances, she also gave us instruction, provided information and even brought
in speaker(s) to talk about proper form and technique, nutrition, strength
training, pre and post exercise stretching, performance/endurance enhancing
drills, basic bike maintenance, USTA rules, race day (preparations, clothing,
expectations and experiences), equipment, local vendors, group bike rides, open
water swims, race course preview, triathlon lingo, the Central Jersey Tri Club,
and she was even at the race to cheer us on!
When it came to race day, not only was I about 12-15 lbs.
lighter than when I started the program, I was confident that I would complete
the race. Even as I entered the water
for the ¼ mile, open water swim — the portion of the race that I knew would be
my weakest — I was very comfortable, knowing that Thea and the RWJ program had
me so very well prepared.
Perhaps most importantly, I have established friendships with
the fellow program participants. We are
still working out together a couple of morning per week.
I am looking forward to my next triathlon and am on my way
toward the lifestyle change for which I was searching.
Thanks Thea and RWJ!
